چکیده
Working papers of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland are preliminary materials circulated to stimulate discussion and critical comment on research in progress. They may not have been subject to the formal editorial review accorded official Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland publications. The views stated herein are those of the authors and are not necessarily those of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland or of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System Working papers are now available electronically through the Cleveland Fed's home page on the World Wide Web: This paper analyzes the restrictions necessary to ensure that the policy rule used by the central bank does not introduce real indeterminacy into the economy. It conducts this analysis in a flexible price economy and a sticky price model. A robust conclusion is that to ensure determinacy the monetary authority should follow a backward-looking rule where the nominal interest rate responds aggresssively to past inflation rates. The Empirical Relevance of Simple Forward- and Backward- looking Models: A View from a Dynamic General Equilibrium Model
Recent research have provided evidence that backward-looking models fit the data well while purely forward-looking models seem to be inconsistent with data. Consequently, many recent papers in the monetary policy rule literature have used “hybrid” models, which contain both backwardand forward-looking components. In this paper, I demonstrate that a dynamic general equilibriummodel with flexible...
متن کاملAssessing the Iranian Fiscal Sustainability in Past and Future through Tax Side of the Economy
This paper, I have focused on the tax side of the fiscal policy to investigate the past and future behavior of fiscal sustainability in Iran. To do so, I have employed two different forward-looking and backward-looking approaches. First, the backward-looking approach is the fiscal policy rule proposed by Daving & Leeper (2011). Precisely, this rule determines that whether the fiscal policy is ...
متن کاملPricing Access: Forward-looking versus Backward-looking Cost Rules
Regulators across many different jurisdictions and industries have recently adopted the practice of setting access prices based on the current costs of providing the relevant facilities. Though widely regarded as being efficient, the efficiency implications of using current costs instead of historical costs have not been formally analyzed. Our analysis shows that given stochastic costs, forward...
متن کاملAlternative Monetary Policy Rules for India; by Michael Debabrata Patra and Muneesh Kapur; IMF Working Paper 12/118; May 1, 2012
This paper empirically evaluates the operational performance of the McCallum rule, the Taylor rule and hybrid rules in India over the period 1996–2011 using quarterly data, with a view to analytically informing the conduct of monetary policy. The results show that forward-looking formulations of both rules and their hybrid version setting a nominal output growth objective for monetary policy wi...
متن کاملDesigning Monetary Policy : Backward - Looking Interest - Rate Rules ∗
When real balances have even a very small productive role, contemporaneous and forwardlooking Taylor-Wicksell rules can induce ubiquitous multiplicities of equilibria and lead to consequences that are unintended by policymakers. This raises the issue of whether it is possible to anchor and stabilize the economy through backward-looking rules. We show that the standard uniqueness results that ar...
